Twenty DPH-2 students participated in the 2015 Capital Lakes DragonFest on Saturday, June 20, 2015. Team “Paddle PRN” led by team captain, Marklie Munroe, raced in three 270 meter heats, and placed first in a consolation division. “We really came together in the 3rd round and everyone was thrilled that we won that last race,” said Munroe.
For all students it was their first time in a dragonboat—a 40 foot long boat that holds 20 paddlers, a steersperson, and a drummer. Paddlers paddle in unison with the drummer assisting in keeping cadence of the paddle strokes. The 5th annual event was held on Lake Wingra at Vilas Park and benefits TEAMSurvivor Madison, Inc., a local non-profit organization providing year round fitness opportunities to women surviving any cancer diagnosis. “What an amazing, heart-touching event, especially the survivor ceremony that honors those who’ve lost their battle with cancer and celebrates current survivors,” said Munroe.
