During their educational careers at the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Pharmacy’, two major milestones celebrate our PharmD students’ development as pharmacists: the White Coat Ceremony and the Pinning Ceremony. One symbolizes their first steps into the profession, and the other recognizes that they’re prepared for patient care.
White Coat Ceremony
The White Coat Ceremony, at the end of the first year of the PharmD curriculum, is the first major milestone of a pharmacy student’s journey toward graduation. And those beautifully bright white coats wouldn’t be possible without the generous donations of School of Pharmacy alumni and friends.

Pinning Ceremony
The next huge step in the educational career of our PharmD students comes right at the end of their third year: the Pinning Ceremony. When licensed pharmacists place these pins onto the lapels of our third-year students, it represents the students’ readiness to enter the realm of patient care and begin their fourth and final year of the curriculum, which they will spend entirely in Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences.

The support of our alumni — who serve as preceptors, mentors, pinners, coaters, and benefactors — makes their success possible. On their behalf, thank you!
