Research – Overview

Our pharmaceutical research focuses on polymeric nanotechnology for drug delivery, non-viral gene delivery, and optical imaging. Within this context, we are very interested in fundamental pharmaceutical concepts in drug solubilization, controlled drug release, and drug targeting. These insights into polymeric nanotechnology allow us to explore pharmacological strategies that are bio-responsive, synergistic and/or theranostic, aiming for cures for lung, breast, and ovarian cancers and systemic fungal diseases. Over 25 years, we have widely researched amphiphilic block copolymer (ABC) micelles for drug delivery, focusing on drug solubilization and controlled drug release (Figure 1). ABC micelles are safely administered by the intravenous (IV) route. We are interested in ABC micelles for multi-drug delivery, i.e. drug combination delivery, aiming for drug targeting of drug combinations, synergy, and reduced, non-overlapping toxicity.

ABC micelles for multi-drug delivery. ABCs consist of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), poly(α-amino acid), or poly(α-hydroxy acid); both have been safely administered by the IV route into humans for cancer treatment.
