Jeff Johnson, professor in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Division, is serving as the Students Modeling A Research Topic (SMART) Team mentor for the Edgewood Middle School SMART team in Madison. The teams of middle or high school students and their teacher work with research scientists as mentors to design and construct physical models of the proteins that are being investigated in the mentor’s laboratory. The primary goal of the SMART Team program is to connect middle and high school students to the real world of science that exists in an active Biomolecular Research Laboratory. Johnson’s daughter Emma is currently participating and his older daughter Taylor was part of the program two years ago. The program was featured in the November 17, 2008 edition of the Wisconsin State Journal .
