Eva Vivian, professor (CHS) in the Pharmacy Practice Division, joined campus and community leaders for “It’s a Family Affair: An Intergenerational Health Initiative,” a family-focused event at the Urban League of Madison. Nearly 60 people attended the health education event held Saturday, October 31, 2015 that featured offered educational sessions about HPV Prevention and Alzheimer’s disease. The presenters provided information about the prevalence of these diseases in the African American community, health beliefs, misconceptions, and disease prevention.
Flu shots were provided by Dane County Immunization Coalition (DCIC). School of Pharmacy students provided blood pressure checks and diabetes screenings during the event as well.
The event was hosted by The African American Health Network (AAHN) of Dane County, a non-profit organization whose mission is to foster networking among African American health professionals and community health advocates and promote health education, healthy
lifestyles, self-advocacy, empowerment and well-being among African Americans in Dane County.
Vivian is currently president of AAHN and strives to support members in making positive contributions that benefit all of society. The organization offers onsite and weekend mentoring, education initiatives, health and wellness events, and economic development programs.
Vivian’s research focus is identifying disparities in the treatment of hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic diseases among ethnic minorities and developing and implementing strategies to reduce and eliminate them.
