Cavallari highlights advances in precision medicine

Pharmacogenetics and predictive prescribing was the topic addressed by Larisa H. Cavallari, PharmD, BCPS, FCCP, Associate Professor and Associate Chair Department of Pharmacotherapy and Translational Research Director, Center for Pharmacogenomics, Associate Director, Personalized Medicine Program, University of Florida, College of Pharmacy, the invited speaker for the Pharmacy Practice Division seminar series.

Faculty and staff attended to learn about Cavallari’s genetic and translational research, including case studies related to the differences in drug metabolic pathways which can affect individual responses to drugs. Cavallari shared an example of a test that can determine the enzyme level in an individual as too much, too little, or not present, resulting in a unique metabolic blueprint which can help regulate the efficacy and safety of medication for that individual. The pharmacy profession is at the forefront of research in the area of personalized medicine as demonstrated through the increase in translational research and ultimately positive patient outcomes.

Orly Vardeny, Associate Professor (CHS), Pharmacy Practice Division served as faculty host for Dr. Cavallari.
